Interviu: Axel Reinemer- Jazzanova

You stated on your website that your music can take people along on a trip. What kind of trip are we talking about, I mean, what is the feeling that you want to send to the audience while performing?
Sometimes our songs travel from this part to that part and we want to take people along with us on this trip. Also, the music we’ve done over the last years changed. We started with electronic music and now we started using instruments and musicians, and that’s a long travel for us, but people kept following us. It’s not another kind of trip, you know…(laughs)
No no no, I wasn’t talking about that trip. But what kind of feeling does the Jazzanova music launch?
It depends on the songs, but in the live show I am happy if I see that people are smiling and dancing and just feel really good. So that’s the trip. And if you also join slow songs or fast songs and understand why we do it and why we use these fluctuations, then you got the message. We like to discover and explore and it’s good that people like the last album, it’s our way to go, our new direction. Maybe people expected something else and they’re shocked, but the music we like is in this album and this is what we do and we're glad that we have followers.
So it's a joyful trip without the substance.
Yeah (smiles).
How was the change from using samples to create music to live concerts, how did you perceive this change?
The change... we got on stage for live performance for the first time last year, we didn’t use to play live before. But now with the new album we got on tour with musicians and this was something new, especially for me, because I was always in the studio making the music and I didn’t really get the reaction from the audience. I’m a DJ and I don’t really get to see the audience from behind the desk but now I get this good vibe from the audience and this is a great feeling.

On your website, you also stated that DJs and producers are rather anonymous and that they need a personal touch for the music to get to the audience. What is Jazzanova’s personal touch?
I think that for the live shows the personal touch is Paul Randolph, he represents the songs. As Jazzanova's personal touch I would say just the feel on stage that we have a good show and that we feel good and there’s a certain type of chemistry.
You said that you like to inspire from all kinds of music and styles, but which one is the most inspiring to you?
It depends on the mood. Sometimes I like to just play some hip-hop and feel: "oh yeah" (making a dangerous face). But that’s where we come from, we started making music with hip-hop and we discovered that American hip-hopers make their music from breaking jazz records so we started breaking records and we became more jazzy.
Did you get the chance to listen to Romanian bands/music?
No, just some folcloristic music in the car, on the radio.
Was that inspiring?
Not really, but what is this instrument that you squeeze (making a back and forth gesture)..
Acordeon?
Yeah, that’s the one. We listened to the sound of acordeon, sounded like Gotan Project.
2002 was a good year for you: an album and 3 compilations. What shall we expect for 2010 from Jazzanova?
We have to set the new album, then the live shows, we will play in South Africa for the football championship and then we’re gonna build a new studio, our own studio, a big one and that’s very important to us. To do whatever we want in our space.

This is Jazzanova's first time in Romania in this line-up. Have you seen anything else besides this amphitheatre?
No. But that’s how it always is, never time for visits, simply landing, rehearsing, food, show, food, sleep, leave.
You should find the time to squeeze in “visiting” in your schedule.
Yeah, I know. It’s a pity.
You've travelled a lot. What is your personal favourite city for shows?
Actually, a really good show was in Berlin.
Of course, that's you hometown.
No, it's not that. You know, the audience in Berlin isn’t easy, they’re very picky and you have to work a lot to get them to like you. But this time there was this big concert on a stadium, there were like 10.000 people and then it started raining but they didn’t leave, so that meant a lot to us. (a short pause)
...
I think Bucharest was good, I think this is what I’ll say after the show (laughs).
Varianta in limba romana

De asemenea, muzica noastra s-a schimbat mult in ultimii ani.

Asta este prima vizita a trupei Jazzanova (trupa live) in Romania.
Am avut un show foarte bun in Berlin.

Desigur, acolo e casa voastra.
